      Railway alignment optimization is a large-scale and time-consuming civil engineering problem. To solve it, a three-dimensional distance transform (3D-DT) algorithm, which is a variant of the three-dimensional Euclidean distance transform (3D-EDT), was previously designed. However, that algorithm is quite computationally intensive. problems that are the interest of this book. This book promotes the use of mathematical optimization and operations research methods in rail transportation. The editors assembled thirteen contributions from leading scholars to present a unified voice, standardize terminology, and assess the state-of-the-art.

In particular, the workshop is meant to bring together researchers from the above areas interested in all aspects of algorithmic methods and models for railway optimization, including those interested in formal software specification and implementation methods, and in formal domain and knowledge models of railway systems.

This issue contains six papers that were presented in preliminary form at the 5th Workshop on Algorithmic Methods and Models for Optimization of Railways (ATMOS ), held at Palma de Mallorca.

Here are many interesting and challenging algorithmic problems waiting to be studied. Research topics include the network design, line planning, time table generation, crew scheduling, rolling stock rostering, shunting, time table information and delay management.

In this talk we present models and algorithmic methods for several of these problems. The algorithmic methods we develop, analyze, and implement are classical exact, approximation, or randomized algorithms, discrete optimization methods like branch and cut and price, and also methods from statistics to model the inherent uncertainty of railway problems.
